PROJECTS Community Outreach Presentations and Workshops POR Local Projects “Outdoor Escape Summer Day Camp ” (July –August 2007) Environmental Arts with the Toronto Catholic District School Board and The Boys and Girls Club of East Scarborough: -Educate participants on key environmental concepts/issues Rational for OUTDOOR ESCAPE: In today’s world of gadgets, computers, mp3’s and cell phones, children and youth throughout North America, especially those living in urban areas are spending less and less time outdoors enjoying their natural surrounding and even less time involved in physical activity. Researchers in America studying this trend have labeled our younger generation, “nature deficit” and believe there is a “direct link in the lack of nature in the lives of today’s wired generation to some of the most disturbing childhood trends, such as the rises in obesity, attention disorders, and depression”. (Louv. 2006, Last Child in the Woods) The new and growing body of research indicates that direct exposure to nature is essential for healthy childhood development and for the physical and emotional health of children and youth. Studies indicate that children are smarter, co-operative, happier and healthier when they have frequent and varied opportunities for structured and exploratory play in the outdoors.
